Hunt for the Golden Eaglet

On September 21-22, 2007, girls from Western Washington will gather to test their endurance, courage, and teamwork and triumph in a challenging adventure race.

Girls will come from all over Totem Council (and Pacific Peaks Council!) to tackle a 22 mile mountain bike ride, a two mile canoe paddle, and a four mile hike up to the top of Rattlesnake Ledge, all while completing challenge activities along the way.

To register: Instructions are on page 10 of the Girl Event Guide: Teens (PDF).

Golden Eaglet Training and Preparation Tips

The Hunt for the Golden Eaglet is a challenging event, but with the right practice and preparation, every girl can have a fun and successful day! The most important skill to practice is teamwork and communication!

Biking

The best way to prepare for the biking section of the Golden Eaglet is to practice riding as a group before the race. You will be riding ~22 miles during the race, so make sure you have gone on at least one ride that is that long. Review pages 96-98 of SAFETY-WISE for the requirements and recommendations for biking. Things you should be able to do by race day:

  • Ride as a group (take turns leading and following). As a group, you will need to come up with a way to make sure you are all staying together and communicating. Come up with some hand signals for slowing down, turning, etc.
  • Use Hand Signals: know the signals for turning right, left, and stopping (see below for pictures).
  • Learn Vocal Cues: you will not be alone on the road or trail. Often you will encounter other riders, walkers, or pedestrians. When passing someone, use your voice to let them know you are behind them. Say something like, "on your left” as you pass them on their left. Don’t surprise them. Be courteous.
The Bike Safety page of TeensHealth has lots of tips about bicycle safety:

Hiking

Each group will hike ~4 miles on a well-marked, established trail. Going on practice hikes – or even walks around your neighborhood – can greatly increase your endurance and enjoyment. Use these simple tips to add to your enjoyment when hiking:

  • Set a pace for the group: DON’T go too fast, and DON’T get separated!
  • Drink water as you hike.
  • If you feel light-headed, stop to rest, drink some water, and eat a snack.
  • If you feel a hot spot, use duct tape or a bandage to prevent blisters.
  • Communicate with your group about how you are doing: remember, this is a team event!
  • Have FUN!!
